Harvard Phd Tarek Selim will present a lecture about the mosque of Amr Ibn Al-As. The mosque is the oldest in Egypt and
Africa having been built in 641. It has always had a special status in the development of
Islamic Cairo and was therefore, given special importance. Additions,
restorations and transformations converted it into a modern building
today. The lecture will discuss these changes and interpret the meaning
of the mosque of Amr to the people of Egypt, and how Egyptians perceive
this mosque, relative to the broader context of Cairo’s Islamic
