While each governorate in Egypt has its own staple food, Port Said remains at the top of the desserts list. To those with a sweet tooth and craving new desserts, these four Port-Saidi delights have you covered!

1- Casata

Beat the heat with the cooling Casata. Casata is a type of Port-Saidi ice cream shaped like a cake. With various layers containing chocolate ice cream, mango, frozen cream, and frozen custard, the flavours come together to give you a delightful, well-balanced dessert.

2- Samnya

Samnya is an authentic Port-Saidi sweet breakfast. Usually sold on the street, it is a delightful start to the day. The renowned dessert is an English cake cut into small cubes and fried in Egyptian butter, aka Samna—hence the name!

3- Tamriyah

Tamriyah is a staple in the Port-Saidi kitchen. People in Port Said enjoy it for breakfast or in the evening with a cup of milk tea. Like the renowned Zalabya, it is made from a special dough of flour and water in a thin local pastry, fried in hot oil until it cooks and turns pink in colour, and finally placed on parchment paper after sprinkling powdered sugar on it.

4- Mang’ona

Mostly eaten during Easter, Mang’ona is a doughy delight that can be made sweet or savoury. It has Greek and Italian origins and is ideal for baking amateurs. Combine eggs with vanilla and sugar until well blended. Gradually mix one cup of milk, followed by one cup of butter and oil. Once the dough forms, shape it after its initial rise, allowing it to ferment again for another two hours. Finally, bake in a moderate oven until it reaches a golden brown colour, and the iconic treat is ready!
