Burger Factory: Tasty Burgers in Zamalek
It seems that burgers are the new cupcakes in town with several specialised shops opening up over the past few months. The most recent, Burger Factory, at the end of Hassan Sabry Street in Zamalek, lured us in with their copy of René Magritte’s iconic image, ‘The Son of Man’, plastered on its exterior; only this one has a burger in front of his face instead of an apple.

The small burger spot holds three high tables and a longer lower one suitable for bigger groups. The attempt at creating a graffiti covered, run-down, metal adorned interior is a sweet one; but it lacks the gruff associated with such a style. A large glass window makes up the front of the restaurant and offers a nice view of the busy street just outside did someone say people watching?

Selecting a high table, we browsed the on-table menus and quickly made our orders. Although it wasn’t too over-crowded, the food did take a little bit of time to arrive.

Using 100% Angus beef, the Cowboy burger (34.95LE) comes with beef bacon, onion rings and cheese. Served on a tray with fries, the meat was extremely tasty with an excellent charcoal finish; the onions added a burst of sweetness that complemented the sandwich as a whole.

The Cheesy Cheese burger (39.95LE) comes topped with a mélange of cheeses which made the already juicy patty even juicier; the blue cheese stood out the most, adding the most potent flavour. The Shrooms burger (34.95LE), as would imply, comes with fried mushrooms on top and cheese. Again, grilled to perfection, the fried mushrooms were also delicious, coated in a firm, crunchy batter.

Our selection of sides included onion rings (14.95) and chilli cheese fries (14.95LE). The former were lovely; fried in the same batter as the mushrooms, they held together nicely and were full of flavour. The chilli cheese fries on the other hand were a complete and utter disappointment. Under the impression that this dish would come as fries topped with chilli and melted cheese, we were in for a not so pleasant surprise.

The tray of fries arrived with literal drizzles of ketchup, mustard, some chilli sauce and artificial cheese sauce; the fries themselves were not very good in themselves, seeing as they looked like the frozen variety and tasted like oil that needed a change. Generally, as good as the fried mushrooms and onion rings were, the hint of used oil and the aftertaste it left did not go unnoticed.

With a selection of milk shakes with flavours ranging chocolate mint to raspberry, we decided on a vanilla one (19.95LE) – you can never go wrong with a classic, and Burger Factory didn’t. While something felt missing and couldn’t put our finger on exactly what that was, the shake was still enjoyable and could easily be shared among two people.

The chocolate fondant (29.95LE), which initially caught our eye from the table next to us, comes in an aluminium dish and is served with a scoop of ice cream. The little cake obediently oozed out a warm milk chocolate filling upon poking, however it let out so much that soon there was nothing else left on the plate. It did taste pretty good though.

The Burger Factory proved to serve delicious burgers – possibly better than its counterparts – however it sadly fell short on other aspects. The chilli cheese fries left a dent in our hearts and the unimpressive fries seemed worth a lot less than almost 10LE if ordered on the side. However, next time you feel like a hearty burger full of juice and flavour, this is the place to go.

360 Tip

Burger Factory delivers!

Best Bit

The burgers.

Worst Bit

The cloud of car exhaust that invaded the restaurant at some point during our visit. Oh, and the ‘chilli cheese fries’.
