Abou Ramy: Tasty Sandwiches in Nasr City

With their chubby chef logo, Abou Ramy is one of Cairo’s
best fast food joints right in heart of the hectic Nasr City.
And though it might be mistakenly related to the famous kebab and kofta
restaurant in El Sayeda Zeinab, it’s only
a mere name resemblance.

Abou Ramy is always busy; so it’s a good thing that they have a large air-conditioned
seating area on two floors, with an outdoor seating area that
looks upon the lively crowded streets. It’s preferable not to sit outside,
though; as that area is a favourite hangout place for hungry cats that are
often drawn to the delicious aromas.

Abou Ramy’s menu is extensive enough to please every palate, whether it is
for a quick bite or a fattening fatta meal. Though it’s mainly a sandwich
joint, the sandwiches take up less than half of the menu, ranging from 9LE
for a small chicken liver sandwich to 22LE for the super-size mokh pané (breaded brain). Any combo meal adds 7LE for fries and a soda.

One sandwich that really stands out is the mozzarella hot dog (13LE),
which is supplemented with enough spices to make the different flavours rush in,
with the perfect amount of pickles and green peppers added. However, the
chicken pané with cheese (16LE) wasn’t as crispy as this reviewer would have
hoped for.

The grilled meats section includes chicken, kabab and kofta that can be
purchased by the kilo or with package meals. A perfectly grilled kilo of kabab
will set you back 160LE and it comes with bread and the accompanying salads.

The one-person-meal is friendlier on the budget: the shish tawouk comes
with bread, rice, tehina and a fresh green salad. The meal is cooked to
perfection with juicy, delicious chicken and steamed basmati rice for only
27LE.

Abou Ramy is more than just another Cairo
fast food restaurant: whether it’s for lunchtime or past midnight, the place is
always full and noisy with happy patrons eating delicious food, which has made
it into a favourite dining spot for many.

360 Tip

There’s a 25LE-minimum charge for home delivery.

Best Bit

Delicious sandwiches are neatly packed and quickly served/delivered.

Worst Bit

The food seems to have a lot of spices in it even if it’s a regular dish.
