There’s no doubt that shawerma has worked its way into becoming one of the most famous street food items in the Arab world and many parts of the Mediterranean, thanks to the Ottoman Empire in the 19th century. Its many forms and shapes is what made it appealing to almost everyone.
Located in Roxy, one of the most distinctive neighbourhoods in Heliopolis, the drive to Abou Heidar is a scenic one as you pass by the picturesque buildings of Korba that combine European and North African Islamic architecture.
The menu might not be the most extensive, but, nonetheless, we knew what we were there for; the one and only shawerma, which comes in a variety of options; slider bun (15LE), Arabian wrap (39 LE), or French bread (52 LE). The slider bun is their most popular option, so that’s what we went for. But keep in mind that one sandwich will never be enough; it’s too small.
The shawerma was cooked to perfection; the meat is slowly roasted on the rotisserie, to be thinly sliced and mixed with diced tomatoes, onions, and coriander. It was hard to grasp what the spices used in the beef were, but it had a slightly zesty finish. The mixture’s juices also created a mouthwatering sauce, which complemented the taste of the soft bread without getting it too soggy. We enjoyed the sandwich with a side of pickles (5LE), and potato chips (9LE).
All in all, this made for a delicious mouthwatering meal, we loved how the sandwiches were bursting with flavour and how fresh everything was. The fact that they make their own chips in sealed bags was also a plus as it helps keep them fresh for takeaway customers.
