At first glance, Cairo may not appear to be the most proficient purveyor of Thai food. We have Italian dining establishments galore, dozens of Lebanese food destinations, and a fair share of Chinese restaurants. However, with a closer look, there are some Thai restaurants in Cairo that will satisfy your cravings. So whether it’s a tom yum you are after or a pad thai, we have got you covered with the following Thai restaurants.
Tao – Dusit Thani
Tao is the gastronomic claim to fame of the Thai hotel Dusit Thani in New Cairo, so it should give you an impression of the authenticity of both the chef and restaurant personnel. Tao is a multi-Asian restaurant, which means they don’t simply serve Thai food. Their menu is extensive, with Thai, Chinese, Japanese, and Indian classics, as well as a live teppanyaki station. A bowl of steaming Thai Tom Saeb Nuea will help you welcome the autumn season with the aroma of its herbs and the zesty flavour of its curry.
Sabai Sabai
The word “Sabai” means comfortable in Thai, and it is indeed a restaurant that will bring you comfort! With two locations in Zamalek and Nasr City, Sabai Sabai serves Asian food with a Thai twist. The place is staffed by Egyptians yet headed by a Thai chef. Their must-try dishes are the one-and-only ped kai yang, which is a baked duck with Thai sauce, as well as the beef curry with eggplant and basil.
Bua Khao
In our humble opinion, this venue is the godfather of Thai dining establishments in Cairo. It first opened almost 20 years ago and has been going strong ever since, which is an accomplishment in Egypt. They even opened a second branch in Gouna’s Movenpick, but Bua Khao isn’t here to play! This tiny dining restaurant is hidden among Maadi’s many midans and is owned and run by a Thai family. Their menu is extensive but not overwhelming. Their signature pad Thai is outstanding, as well as their Tom Ka Gai soup.
Yana – Kempinski New Cairo
New Cairo’s Royal Maxim Palace Kempinski is not only an incredibly luxurious hotel, but it also has one of the best Thai places in town! While Yana specialises in Thai cuisine, they also provide Malaysian meals, Chinese dim sum, and even Singaporean meat. In addition, the restaurant has an excellent ambience rating. Expect a lot of golden Buddhas and a lovely pool view. Their curries are among the most popular Thai items on the menu, along with Singaporean Wagyu beef medallions, and trust us, they will not disappoint you!
Nile Thai Food Restaurant
Nasr City may not be the cooking centre of Egypt, but it has this hidden gem in its vicinity! Nile Thai Food Restaurant is small and standard; expect old wooden chairs and plastic tablecloth-covered tables. However, with their cooks being a mix of Thai, Indonesian, and Malaysian, prepare yourself for a high-quality Thai culinary experience! They also take the word “spicy” very seriously, so if you are not mentally prepared for numb taste buds and a blushed face, keep your order mild. Their wide array of noodles and hen curries are out of this world.
