What It Is:
via Cairo Pickleball Academy
Pickleball is a racket sport that feels like the love child of tennis, ping-pong, Padel, and badminton. It sounds pretty fun, right? Pickleball can be played with two or four players, and the players hit a hollow plastic ball with paddles over a net. Even though this description fits many sports, such as Padel, pickleball still has its distinguishing differences.
Pickleball vs. Padel
The differences between pickleball and Padel lie in the rules, paddles, and layout. First, a padel court is larger than a pickleball court. Plus, a padel court is surrounded by glass walls and a metal cage that can be utilised to keep rallies going, which is not a feature in pickleball.
Origin of Pickleball
Originating in the US, pickleball is almost a replica of badminton. Created through experimenting on a badminton court with different paddle and ball types, pickleball came to life in 1965, adding a new favourite sport worldwide.
Equipment
The equipment you need to play pickleball is pretty straightforward: a racket, ball, and net. This also sounds like what you need to play Padel, but, in reality, the equipment is different. You need a flat, untextured face racket for pickleball—unlike the perforated racket used in Padel. As for the ball, pickleball calls for a lightweight, perforated plastic ball, whereas Padel uses a ball that is akin to a tennis ball but with less pressure. Unfortunately, since this sport is just starting to gain popularity in Egypt, there are still no local brands offering pickleball equipment.
