Amidst the focus on foreign celebrities with Egyptian roots, such as Mena Massoud and Rami Malek, the spotlight often misses other fellow Egyptians abroad who may not be celebrities per se, but definitely have the required star-power to be ones. This time, we direct the light on Dr. Rania Younis, the proof that hard work truly pays off.

We first heard of Younis in a warm recognition post by Women of Egypt. We started exploring further and found her LinkedIn profile, which stated that Rania Younis is an assistant professor at the Oncology and Diagnostic Sciences Department at the University of Maryland in Baltimore. Moreover, she graduated from dental school at the University of Alexandria, after which she practiced general dentistry for 6 years. She then received her Ph.D. in Oral and Experimental Pathology from the University of Maryland in 2011, and strenuously moved her way up to maintain her current and progressing status. 

According to the university’s website, her list of achievements does not stop there. She also has been a fellow of the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology since 2009, and was awarded the prestigious NIH Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award in craniofacial research, as well as other various accomplishments. Research Gate also shares some of Younis’ projects, in which she collaborated, such as Tumor Immunology of Head and Neck Cancer. The cherry on top was when she was selected, among 30 national and international applicants, to take part in innovative immunotherapy study that won the Society for Immunotherapy of Cancer’s (SITC) Sparkathon competition, held in September 2018 in Chicago. The team’s objective is to “study the possibility of increasing the safety margin for cancer immunotherapy patients, with the goal of proposing a solution in one year”.
