We always love telling you, our readers, all about young local talents. Indeed, nothing makes us more proud than seeing one of our fellow Egyptians succeed and take the world by storm. Last night, at the Golden Globes to be specific, something quite extraordinary happened when Egyptian American actor Rami Malek stole the show with a heart-warming speech.
Malek delivered his speech upon winning Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture Drama for his role as the iconic Freddy Mercury in the film Bohemian Rhapsody (2018). We also have to say that the film itself won a Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture.
Malek’s win should come as no surprise considering the effort, time, and sheer dedication/commitment Malek had when it came to playing Mercury. Just watch as Malek briefly outlines how he prepped for his role in the biopic.
In addition to playing Mercury, Malek is also known for his lead role as Elliot Alderson in the USA Network television series Mr. Robot (2015); a show that has received rave reviews, as indicated by its 8.6/10 rating on IMDb, and its 98% on rottentomatoes.com.
We also have to say that Malek’s status as an “Egyptian American” is something that has been highlighted by international media outlets, as an indication of Hollywood’s relatively new focus on equality, diversity, and representation. As such, we can safely say that Malek’s accomplishment is equally important to Egyptians and non-Egyptians alike. We couldn’t possibly be more proud!
