Cairo 360
Cairo, with its bustling streets, kind people, and warm weather. Our beloved city has always been a muse for filmmakers, writers, and artists across all disciplines. One of our favourite depictions of Cairo are those recorded in film, for it can take us back and bring us forward and across different times. In this article, we explore four movies that succeeded in capturing some of the most beautiful and lively parts of Cairo’s streets.
Ahla El Aw2at
After her mother dies, Salma (played by Hanan Turk) receives anonymous letters. On her journey to unravel the mystery behind the author of these letters, she reunites with her old friends Yousriyah (played by Hend Sabri) and Doha (played by Menna Shalabi). The movie carries us through Cairo’s old apartments and streets, meaningful bonds and friendships, and famous songs, including those by Mohamed Mounir.
Youm Lel Setat
The announcement of a new swimming pool allocated every Sunday exclusively for women stirs controversy in the neighbourhood, with men arguing they should have daily access. Directed by Kamala Abu Zekry, the 2016 film showcases the stories, experiences, and struggles of women living in a socially deprived neighbourhood in Cairo.
Fe Sha2et Masr El Gedida
After relocating to an apartment in Heliopolis, Yehia (played by Khaled Abol Naga) realises the apartment is haunted by the ghost of its previous tenant, Tahany. The story follows Nagwa’s (played by Ghada Adel) search for her beloved music teacher, only to find that she has left the apartment, thus meeting Yehia instead. They both venture on a journey to find Tahany and encounter unexpected and surprising events along the way. The film captures the essence of Masr El Gedida, emphasising the unique buildings, characters, neighbourhoods, and city life.
Banat West El Balad
After meeting by chance, two best friends, Yasmin (played by Menna Shalabi) and Jumana (played by Hend Sabri), set off on an adventure in pursuit of true love. Together, they guide us through the streets of West El Balad and its people, revealing some of the tragic, joyful, and rich stories that the part of the city has to offer.
