January is drawing to an end, but before it leaves, it gifts us with an exciting array of films. This week in Cairo Cinemas, you can be treated to a biopic starring Margot Robbie in Mary Queen of Scots, a drama, Serenity, starring Anne Hathaway and Matthew McConaughey, or a sci-fi thriller starring Keanu Reeves.
What’s it about? Margot Robbie plays Queen Elizabeth I, in a time of conflict with Mary Stuart (played by Saoirse Ronan), Queen of France, during an unstable political period of time. Political games commence as both women fight for more sovereignty.
The good: Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie starring alongside each other means that audiences are in for a spectacle of acting skill. It has been labelled as suspenseful, thrilling, intoxicating, and wicked.
The bad: Some critics, on the other hand, feel that the movie could be boring at times, and perhaps fails to be very accurate.
What’s it about? Mathew McConaughey plays a fishing boat captain, Baker Dill, who leads tours in the area. His ex-wife (Anne Hathaway) tracks him down to ask him for his help to save her from her abusive husband, bringing him back to the life he wanted to forget.
The good: The movie stars two Academy Award winners, and two nominees, added to that, it’s directed and written by Steven Knight, who’s known for Redemption and Locke. This thrilling movie looks very promising.
The bad: Unfortunately, critics have been relentless in picking the problems of this film, they say the movie tries to be clever and complicated, but ends up being ridiculous and a bit obvious.
What’s it about? Keanu Reeves plays Will Foster, a Scientist who’s whole family dies in a severe car accident. Unable to handle their loss, Foster does everything possible to bring them back to life through human cloning.
The good: The plot sounds a bit fresh, and a lot of exciting complications could arise from such a premise. Keanu Reeves has become much more popular after the continued success of the John Wick series, and this could be the right move to build on his success.
The bad: Unfortunately, the movie has been hammered with horrid reviews. There’s very little positive reception of the film.
BONUS PICK: Dragon Ball Super: Broly
What’s it about? Another adventure awaits for Goku and Vegeta as Broly, the Saiyan warrior, proves that he’s unlike any fighter they’ve ever seen before.
The good: Anime lovers and fans of Dragon Ball can get to enjoy this epic battle on the big screen like never before. The movie has also been receiving quite positive reviews.
The bad: This movie caters to a very specific audience, so if you do not instantly gravitate towards it, chances are you won’t like it.
