You have probably seen pink shirts, pink makeup, and even pink sushi everywhere this month, and that’s because the new Barbie movie finally came to Egypt. So, let’s talk about this new Barbie film because, boy, there are opinions all over on this one. Some said they absolutely loved it; we’re talking tears and everything. Then there are the ones who left the theatre wondering what all the hype was about. Us? Well, we are here to break it down for you in a good ol’ honest fashion. Before you even think about throwing on your finest Barbie ensemble and hitting the cinema, let us tell you about our take on it.
There’s no denying that Margot Robbie gives it her all in this movie, but to some, the film falls flat. It was advertised as a wild ride of quirky satire, and to be fair, it starts off strong with humour and playful nods, but then it takes another wild left turn. Suddenly, we’re in the midst of over-the-top dramatic speeches and an ending that tries to tug at our heartstrings. We would also like to point out that the target audience of this movie is people in their twenties rather than little kids. To the parents who dragged their little ones in, thinking this was some colourful kiddie flick, but were shocked by the number of teenagers and people in their twenties, we are sorry, but we loved Barbie first. And let us be the ones to tell you that this isn’t your typical children’s fairytale story.

For starters, it is a fairytale comedy cranked up to eleven, a real pastiche that just works. Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling have got some solid on-screen chemistry going on, and most people seem to agree on that. Although some women were mad that Margot stole their on-screen crush, we give the chemistry a 10/10. When it comes to the setting, the world they’ve crafted is like a colourful playground for your eyeballs. Let us tell you that even the people who do not usually notice sets and costumes were still impressed.

If you’re a dude and your girlfriend or sister is forcing you to go watch it, make sure to bring some tissues in with you because you might find yourself oddly moved by this sugary fairytale Barbieworld. It’s got a finale that hits you right in the feels. You’ll probably be thinking, “Wait, did I just get the warm fuzzies from a Barbie movie?”. But if you’re a guy who’s not too keen on seeing men being portrayed as emotional wrecks while the women rule, this might not be your jam. Ryan Gosling’s take on a lovably insecure Ken might ruffle a few feathers in that regard.

While we are not trying to influence your opinion or tell you whether you should go see it or not, we’re giving you a brief heads-up on what to expect once you enter the theatre. We know it is always good to get a glimpse of nostalgia, and at the end of the day, this movie will give you the dose you need. If you grew up more of a Bratz girl or a My Scene girl, you’ll still love this movie and get a taste of the pink-flavoured nostalgia.
