In Cairo Cinemas: What to Expect from This Week’s New Films
Cairo 360
January and February the best month for movies – in fact, they’ve come to be known as Hollywood’s ‘dump months’. It’s a time where, historically, paying audiences are, while Oscar eligibility rules mean that producers try to get their big guns in cinemas well before the start of the New Year.
We’ve already seen the consequences of this – January’s films have, thus far, been of a, let’s say, questionable quality. We’d love to say this week is different but, well, check it out for yourself.
Resident Evil: The Final Chapter
What’s it About? Now on its sixth instalment – although its seemed like much, much more – Resident Evil is coming to a screeching halt, with Milla Jovovich’s Alice gearing up to lead one last charge against the evil Umbrella Corporation’s forces.
Why it Could Be Good: It’s been a long time in the coming and it’s always nice to see a pay-off to any long-running series.
Why it Could Be Bad: Because the other five films have been pretty terrible – not even terrible in a memorable way. All five instalments kind of melt into each other with no real tangible continuation except for Alice’s blind search for some kind of vague truth. At least poor Milla Jovovich will finally be free – she’s looked more and more bored with every film.
Monster Trucks
What’s it About? This one’s a weird one – a starry-eyed teen who dreams of bigger things than the life he was born into builds a monster truck from scrap metal, before he finds a new friend in the form of some kind of strange gas-guzzling sea creature (or monster) that then comes to power the monster truck. What? Yeah.
Why it Could Be Good: Monster Trucks harks back to 80s and 90s kids films like E.T. – a kid makes friends with some kind of alien creature, keeps it a secret and then learns something about themselves. It’s corny, but its feel-good.
Why it Might Be Bad: Because it sounds, for lack of a better word, unbelievably lame. These wholesome movies might have been a hit in the 80s and early 90s, but so were male perms, acid wash jeans and full-body tracksuits.
Bastards
What’s it About? Two brothers discover (in their adult lives) that their mother has been lying to them about the true identity of their father, before hitting the road in search of him.
Why it Could Be Good:Own Wilson, Ed Helms and JK Simmons in a comedy can never be a bad thing and who doesn’t love a road trip movie? Ving Rhames and Glenn Close are in the movie, too.
Why it Could Be Bad: For the last five years or so, Judd Apatow has had his finger prints on some of the best Hollywood comedies – think Bridesmaids and Knocked Up. In trying to replicate his particular style of writing and production we’ve had poor copycats and this could well be one of them.
