On the 11th of November, the Maadi community’s local brands came together to join a fundraising bazaar at KMT House, with 100% of the sales directed towards the Egyptian Red Crescent‘s Gaza relief. What The Crust, The first and only women-led AVPN-affiliate pizzeria in Egypt & Africa, took the crowd by surprise as they announced their brand new Musakhan Pizza, exclusively made for the bazaar attendees that combines Italian and Palestinian cultures through an authentic Italian pizza crust united with the Palestinian onion and chicken-based national dish.

Sharing the bazaar with their Instagram audience, the team at What The Crust was surprised as their comment section was taken by a storm of intrigued pizza lovers looking to get their hands on the innovation. In a matter of five days, What The Crust’s founder & chef broke the silence by calling it “the only time you’ll see us put chicken on pizza”. She shared a recipe for their “Pizza for Palestine” for people to try from the comfort of their own homes, and in the hope that pizzerias all over the world would add this special delicacy and direct profits to humanitarian aid in Palestine.

The event – organised by Maadi For Cause, an organisation hosting charity events in Maadi and hosted at KMT House – raised 377,000 EGP. Multiple local brands took part in celebrating the Palestinian identity through statement pieces, attire, and national dishes, including musakhan. Originating in the Tulkarm and Jenin area, musakhan is a Palestinian national dish composed of roasted chicken baked with onions, sumac, allspice, saffron, and fried pine nuts served over shami taboon bread. A part of honouring Palestinian tradition is ditching the silverware and using your bare hands while eating musakhan. You can catch What The Crust’s Muskhan Pizza recipe here.
