The Definitive Guide to Living in the Capital , Cairo , Egypt

With cooler weather undoubtedly on the way, now seems to be the best time to get out and enjoy the city. With the shortened curfew, hundreds of events are emerging for the weekend.

Back on the nightlife scene this Thursday, glamorous roof-top club, Cloudeleven hosts a ‘Thursday Riot‘, where Dj Ahmed Eid spins his uplifting house sets. Tamarai compete with their ‘Homecoming’ event, where DJs Mohasseb and Shawky guarantee to get the crowd moving. Furthermore, Otium defy the curfew with their hard-core ‘No Curfew’ event. Never one to miss out on a good old knees up, Alchemy also seduce party-goers with promises of exotic sangria cocktails at ‘Scarlet’s Vintage Brew’ event.

Local bands are kick-starting the weekend too; Beatles cover band, Glass Onion take to the stage at Cairo Jazz Club and The Cadillacs rock around the clock at Sufi. Satirical acts Salalem and High on Body Fat join forces at El Genaina Theater whilst ReTune have organised their ‘CD release concert‘, complete with performances from nine, up and coming sha3bi and hiphop artists at Rawabet Theater.

Channelling our inner-artists, contemporary artist Ashok Sukumaran hosts a talk titled ‘A Conversation Between Art Forms and Organisational Forms’ at Beirut. Focusing on a slightly different media, photojournalist Ahmed Hayman discusses his most recent project ‘Like Drops of Water’ at Photopia. Continuing for the weekend, Beit El Sennary explore Egyptian heritage and culture at their ‘He Who Loses His Past is Lost‘ festival.   

Seemingly a weekend for celebrating the arts, film screenings and performances are rife. Medrar has gathered up a marathons-worth of independent movies from around the world for the week-long ‘5^th Cairo Video Festival’. Elsewhere at El Sawy Culturewheel, the work of local female film makers is celebrated at the ‘Ana Hena’ premiere before local band Us We Lazq take over. The ‘Contemporary Dance Night’ at Falaki Theater runs for six consecutive days, with a full schedule of contemporary dance performances.

With Friday still being a little obsolete, events are largely set to re-start on Saturday. Tamarai dive straight in with heavy house music sets at their ‘Some Like it Deep’ event whilst DJs Pedro and Tamer hit the decks at ‘On the Mix’ at Otium. For something a little more chilled, join guitar duo Double Barrel at Bikya Nasr City or head over to Cairo Jazz Club for Dina El Wedidi’s politically driven acoustic sessions. Ever wondered about the electronic music scene? On an international trip around the globe, Berlin Clubnacht land in Cairo, with the aim of answering all your questions and more at 100Copies Music Space.  

The Cairo Marriott Hotel are hosting the ‘Pink Party For the Cure‘; a ladies only day of zumba fitness, to raise awareness for breast cancer. The ‘Date Palm Festival’ at Fagnoun offers up a fun-filled, family day out, aimed at bringing Egyptians together over the mutual love of dates – the fruit, that is.

Don’t miss recently opened art exhibitions; the ‘Kayaan Foundation’ Exhibition at Saad Zaghloul Museum, ‘Arts for Peace & Freedom‘ at Darb 1718, ‘Fair Usage’ at Arthropologie and ‘Made in Lebanon‘ at Mashrabia Gallery.
