Cairo Weekend Guide: NYE Hangover, Live Music & New Art
Cairo 360
After surviving the wild Christmas and New Year celebrations, venues in the city would be forgiven for taking it easy this weekend. But that’s just not Cairo’s style and we’re set for another event-filled weekend. After all, you know what they say; there’s no rest for the wicked.
This Thursday, Alchemy sees in the weekend with their Daiquiri-ridden, Forbidden Nectar, whilst De Ja Vu fill Cairo Jazz Club with their bopping blues covers. Cairokee front-man, Amir Eid, goes solo at El Sawy Culturewheel and local Rai-fusion band, Sahara, hit the stage at After Eight, while Mostafa El Sawy brings his unique, uplifting sounds to Sufi.
All the way from Belgium, Tunisian diva, Ghalia Benali, performs Oriental melodies at Kasr El Nil Theatre, whilst the Kafafa Troupe performs at El Dammah Theater. For something a little more chilled, head over to Heliopolis where Magawra screen renowned prison break drama, ‘Papillon’.
On Friday, sha3by maestro, DJ Amr Ezz, spins his sets at After Eight, while DJ Mayounah and DJ Fabric take over the decks at Cairo Jazz Club. At the other end of the musical spectrum, acclaimed composer, Omar Khairat, performs at Cairo Opera House. Beit El Raseef host a thought provoking Dream Talk, examining the psychology behind dreams and Artellewa continues the Christmas festivities by screening the inspiriting classic, ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’.
Rounding up the weekend on Saturday, ‘There’s Something Bloody About Mary’ welcomes a new exhibition, while Nubian-inspired musician, Basheer, plays at Cairo Jazz Club. Nine-man band, Transistor, rock out at After Eight, whilst Raymond M aspires to ignite your senses at 100Copies Music Space.
Alongside these, why not check out some of the many art exhibitions running across the city. ‘The Clown Laughing and Crying’ is Omar El Nagdy’s most recent exhibition at the Picasso Gallery, while, delving into the realm of photography, ‘Digital Life’ is showing at the Ahmed Shawky Museum and the winning photographs from ‘Egypt Photo Marathon 2013’ are on display at Darb 1718.
Remember, this is only a snippet of what’s happening this weekend; check out Cairo 360’s event calendar for more. Have a great weekend!
