Cairo Weekend Guide: More Music, Galleries Galore and TokTok 3

Somehow we’ve made it through to another weekend, and we couldn’t be more excited about all the ways we get to celebrate that fact.
After a hot and high-paced week, there’s no reason you shouldn’t settle down on Thursday night and treat yourself to an evening of relaxation with
the soothing sounds of clarinet leading the Mohamad Wehedy Ensemble in the Open Air Theatre of Cairo Opera House.
If you’re looking for something a little more upbeat, then head on over to
Al Azhar park where Ahmed El Haggar and City Band will perform at  El Genaina Theatre. Across town, Simplexity
will host a pre-launch party at Cairo Jazz Club for their debut album featuring a performance by Screwdriver, while rai musicians Sa7ra will
perform at After 8.

In an event hosted by Ossama El Bahr, author Alaa El Aswany will give a lecture at El Sawy Culturewheel about Egypt after the revolution.
Afterward you can walk over to El Sawy’s Wisdom hall for a performance of oriental
music by the Sehr El Sharq Group.

A series of ongoing exhibitions
are sure to keep you intrigued this weekend. From Darb 17 18’s ‘Maspero’group exhibition, where artists reflect on how their lives and national identity
have been shaped by this architectural icon, to the ‘Contemporary Views IV’ Exhibition
at Al Masar Gallery (which, beware, is closed on Fridays) there is enough
variety to keep anyone intrigued. Don’t forget to check out ‘The Contemporaries

at Tache Art
Gallery
or ‘To Egypt with Love II’ at the Safer
Khan Art
Gallery
along the way.

Come
Friday, we’ll be looking forward to hearing Uss we Laz2
play at El Sawy Culturewheel
again; their versatile music takes a unique twist on contemporary Egyptian
songs and always leaves us wanting more. If you have a certain craving to hear
marimba expertly played this weekend then don’t miss Nesma Abdel Aziz and her
ensemble’s performance in Cairo Opera House’s Open-Air Theatre. In
case you’re not quite ready for bed at this point, you can head to After Eight to
enjoy the funk rock group Salalem; they’ll be on stage till closing.

After
the instant success of the TokTok 2 comic books, we can’t wait to see what TokTok 3 has in store for us at Townhouse Gallery’s
launch party
for the newest installment in the series on Saturday.
If there’s something else that you don’t get to experience every day, it’s the group Spunky
Dynamite
playing their funk, Latin, and rock and roll dance hits at the H501
bar in Heliopolis. If that’s a little too far out for
you at the end of the weekend, then you can always catch Taxi band playing at the Cairo Jazz Club. If
experimental music is more your style this weekend then you can’t miss local
group Hoga playing oriental jazz at El Sawy Culturewheel.

There are definitely more than enough things to keep you busy this weekend in Cairo; have fun and enjoy!
