Cairo Weekend Guide: El-Fit Fitness Festival, Top of the Pops & Barney Live
Cairo 360
Hello
Cairo!
Hickory dickory
dock, all day long we’ve been watching the clock; we can’t wait for the
weekend, our will is being weakened, but to the clubs and to the parties we’ll
flock.
Brilliant
rhyming aside, Thursday has arrived
to free us of the shackles and burdens of adult life. We begin on the Giza
Corniche, where Y Lounge is boarding for Air Nights; a potentially weird
aeronautical-themed evening of thumping music courtesy of peculiarly named DJs, Fat Moe, Ebbo, Shiha, Nii and Dr K.
Elsewhere,
Cairo Jazz Club is offering a double whammy of live music with the Cadillacs
and Beatles tribute band, Glass Onion, while Jazz Mate gets a little soulful
with Bluenotes. Meanwhile, fists will be pumping all night long at Roof Bar
where DJ Simon shall reside for the evening, while Heineken continues the most
drawn-out birthday celebrations we’ve ever seen at Deals 2, where Crash Boom
Bang will be crashing, booming and banging all over the place.
Jazz aficionado,
Yehia Khalil, brings a bit of class to proceedings at Cairo Opera House, while
experimental band, Telepoetic, make sure newly opened club, Eau Zone, hits the
ground running. More local music comes in the form of Wust El Balad, who shall
perform at El Sawy Culturewheel, while folk band, Magna Khan, return to the
public eye with a gig at Darb 1718.
It isn’t
all debauchery and badly setup sound equipment, though. The trippy purple
dinosaur that is Barney comes to life at Cairo International Convention Centre,
as does Cartoon Network stalwart, BEN 10, at MUST Opera House.
Friday sees more Heineken birthday celebrations at
Otium in Zamalek, while Tamarai resurrects the spirit of Top of the Pops for a
night of 80s and 90s hits. Next door at Fairmont Nile City, DJ
Feedo and accomplice, DJ Hook, hold down R&B Night at O Bar, while DJ Fahmy & DJ Samba return to Cairo Jazz Club and DJ Zizo reigns
supreme at Roof Bar.
100Copies
Music continues to be one of the most overlooked venues in Cairo despite
showcasing some of the best underground talent this city has to offer. This
week, electronic wizard, Ramsi Lehner, is joined by visual artist, Yosra El Abd
– a feast for the senses.
Elsewhere,
the National Equestrian Championship continues into a second weekend at the
Sports Association Equestrian Club in Heliopolis, while the Harlem Shake
continues to spread like wildfire, as the city’s worst dancers descend on the Great
Pyramids of Giza and taint the only thing we have to be proud of.
If you
insist on doing something constructive, however, Downtown Katameya Mall is hosting the
Employers 7th Employment Fair.
With Saturday comes the long-awaited launch
of the inaugural El-Fit Fitness Festival, where Cairene’s can enjoy the
benefits of a host of different fun health and fitness activities. Another
event that is sure to nourish mind, body and soul, is International Volunteer
Day at Gezirah Arts Cernter, where volunteers, NGOs and non-profit
organisations will congregate.
Saturday
evening ushers in more live music, with local bands, Darwasha and Salalem,
performing at Cairo Jazz Club, while shaabi-rap group, No Comment, return to
After Eight in Downtown Cairo. Elsewhere, award-winning musician, Fathy Salama,
struts his stuff at Cairo Opera House, while Ahmed Harfoush will have women –
and men – swooning at Bar D’O and DJ Aly and DJ Kiko bring a little
slice of Beirut to the Giza Corniche for Lebanese Love at Bamboo.
As always, Cairo’s art scene continues to expand. This week’s
new exhibitions include ‘900KM Nile City’
at Townhouse Gallery, ‘Transient Chronicles’ at 6 Contemporary Arts and ‘Behind
the Walls’ at Cala Art Gallery.
This is just a snapshot of the events in our weird, beloved
city; check out the Cairo 360 events calendar for more. Have a great weekend!
