It all started when everyone’s Facebook newsfeed was spammed with pictures of soft ice cream served in doughnut cones from Hungary and New York. Worldwide, people were going just crazy over this mouth-watering creation and it didn’t take long till Rony’s Truck decided to bring the trend to Egypt.
Temporarily located at Arkan Plaza in Sheikh Zayed at the time of our visit, Rony’s Truck isn’t an actual truck, but a tricycle set-up like ByBike, Grab One, Sushi Bike, etc. The design of the tricycle has nothing particularly special about it; with plain black paint with the logo on it and a red top, it might go unnoticed by some.
Rony’s offers the doughnut ice cream cone with choices of adding extra Oreos or Twix top. but we opted with for a basic Classic Cone (35LE). With this being the only item on the menu, we expected a flawless dessert, but it was a bit of a letdown.
The problem was with the main centrepiece, the doughnut cone itself. Although the rich and creamy vanilla ice cream had a terrific smooth texture, the cone bore little resemblance to a doughnut – it was far too dense, thick and chewy.
This wasn’t the only problem, though; firstly, the caramel was sauce was thin and runny and the chocolate sauce wasn’t available at the time of our visit. This might have been remedied by the inner coating of Nutella that the doughnut was meant to have to add an extra depth of flavour and act as a barrier to keep the doughnut from getting soggy from the ice cream; but all it transpired to be was a lump of chocolate in the bottom.
We love food trends coming to Egypt and Rony’s Truck’s attempt at bringing this particular trend makes sense – Egypt loves sweets and desserts, after all. But in this case, the fact that this was far from what a doughnut cone meant that that whole dessert not only fell down in terms of quality.
