Iced tea is the perfect summertime drink — it’s cold and refreshing and plays well with added fruits and flavourings like peach, lemon, and raspberry. All across Cairo, we can now find that iced tea is on the menu of every restaurant and cafe in one or two flavours. So what is so appealing about chilled tea that made it a vital part of our food culture landscape all of a sudden? Tea has been with us for centuries, and iced tea has already carved out its place in our modern world because of its sentimental value and bright modernised new look.
Iced tea is usually made from black tea, but other types can be used, including green, white, and herbal teas like hibiscus or peppermint. Tea is brewed and left to cool, and then you can add any flavoured syrup with ice and garnish – it is that simple. If you’re trying to kick your coffee or energy drink habit, but either can’t or don’t want to give up caffeine entirely, you may be able to wean yourself down to a more reasonable amount by switching to iced tea. It is particularly easier to do this switch during summer when cool, refreshing drinks are a much nicer way to start the day. When it comes to drinking iced tea every day, it’s probably safest to brew it yourself using tea bags or opt to get it from places that don’t use too many preservatives and ready-mixes, so you don’t start your day with a sugar-rush trip. So, if you’re one of the iced tea crowd and you’re constantly on the look for good-quality iced teas, here are a few places to find them:
