Public libraries can be hard to find in Cairo, but they do exist. Whether you’re a bookworm looking for a home or a quiet public space to work or study, these libraries could be your new favourite spot. Here’s a list of some public libraries in Cairo with their locations, schedules, and entry fees.
Maadi Public Library

The Maadi Public Library is open daily from 8 AM to 6:30 PM and has an EGP 30 entrance fee. The library is well-established, with multiple spacious areas for the public and the numerous cultural events it holds. It also has courses and workshops along with awareness seminars.
National Library

Located on the Nile Corniche, Downtown, the National Library is a free-entry public library open to the public every day from 9 AM to 5 PM except Fridays and Saturdays. The books are available for viewing, but borrowing them is not an option.
Greater Cairo Public Library

Greater Cairo Public Library is a historical palace in Zamalek. The library is open daily from 9:15 AM to 2:30 PM except Friday, and they have membership options. The vast place has a stunning outdoor area that overlooks the Nile. Entry fees are EGP 10 for Egyptians and EGP 50 for foreigners.
Nederlands-Vlaams Instituut in Cairo (NVIC)

A Dutch institution in Zamalek with a cosy, quiet atmosphere, this place is great for reading, studying, or working, and they’re the only option on this list with reliable Wi-Fi. It’s open from Sunday to Thursday from 9 AM to 3 PM. There are no entry fees, but prior booking is required through their email: t.lavent@nvic.leidenuniv.nl to reserve your time and spot. The institution also holds a number of cultural events and film screenings.
Public Misr Library

It’s located on the Nile Corniche in Dokki with a small entry fee. Public Misr Library is a clean, spacious public library with a lovely view of the Nile. It’s open daily from 10 AM to 7 PM. It also holds digital resources such as online databases and e-books.
