The Critics’ Choice Awards honours outstanding achievements in film and television. Presented by entertainment critics and journalists from the Broadcast Film Critics Association (BFCA) and the Broadcast Television Journalists Association (BTJA), this year’s edition of the coveted award show was hosted by Chelsea Handler. Here are some memorable moments from the night.
Oppenheimer’s Undefeated Streak of Awards

In what came as no surprise to most, Oppenheimer has kept its streak of wins through every award show, and this year’s Critics’ Choice Awards were no different, with eight wins for the film. Among those wins were Christopher Nolan with the Best Director award and Robert Downey Jr. with Best Supporting Actor, making them worthy Academy Award front-runners.
Barbie’s Record 18-Nomination Count

Oppenheimer’s frenemy, Barbie, entered the night as the most nominated movie, with a record-breaking 18 nominations. Greta Gerwig’s witty comedy still managed to win for its costumes, production design, and the song I’m Just Ken, despite losing in the most prominent categories to Oppenheimer. Ryan Gosling had the best reaction to the song winning, going through the five stages of confusion, with some speculating that he thought the award should’ve gone to Billie Eilish’s What Was I Made For?
Chelsea Handler Goes Off-Script, Honouring Barbie

Host Chelsea Handler went off script at the end of the show and invited Greta and star Margot Robbie to give a speech, given that their awards were announced in the margins before the commercial break and weren’t given their fair share of attention.
Handler Disses Jo Koy’s Distasteful Joke

One of Handler’s best jokes of the night was her dig at her ex Jo Koy, whose poorly written jokes at the Golden Globes made quite a scandal – dismissing the social commentary of Barbie. Handler thanked the crowd for laughing at her joke because “her writers wrote it”, alluding to Koy’s attempt to justify his poorly received lines by blaming his writers.
Emma Stone & Paul Giamatti’s Sentimental Speeches

Another exciting win of the night was Poor Things actress Emma Stone, who gave a shout-out to her fellow nominees from Killers of the Flower Moon. The best lead-actor award went to Paul Giamatti for his role in The Holdovers as a history teacher, who made a moving speech honouring his father – formerly president of Yale and commissioner of Major League Baseball – finishing off the sentimental speech with some laughter.
Succession & The Bear Take it All

It was also a big night for television, with Succession and The Bear racking most of the awards. The new internet obsession with Jeremy Allen White goes beyond his steamy Calvin Klein commercial, with his outstanding performance in The Bear earning him Best Actor in a Comedy Series, with his co-star Ayo Edebiri also winning Best Actress in a Comedy Series.
