Gone are the days when the international art world was dominated by Western institutions. And there are no two ways about it: Egyptian art is unique, revolutionary, and groundbreaking. Needless to say, many Egyptian artists have received much-deserved appreciation locally and globally. With this in mind, here are some Egyptian artists who are flourishing across international waters.

Inji Efflatoun (1924-1989)

An Egyptian painter and feminist, Inji Efflatoun was one of Egypt’s most progressive and bold artists. Efflatoun’s work has been exhibited globally in many countries and cities. From Rome and Paris to Moscow and New Delhi, Efflatoun’s art has certainly made waves in the international art scene. Currently, her work is displayed at Amir Taz Palace in Cairo and the Barjeel Art Foundation in Sharjah.

Ghada Amer (1963)

Ghada Amer is a contemporary artist who focuses on themes of gender and sexuality. She studied painting in France, where she lived for around 20 years. Her work combines painting with needlework, creating multimedia artworks that have shown the world the innovation of Egyptian art. Displayed in several cities, her work has travelled worldwide from New York to Valencia.

Youssef Sida (1922-1994)

Born in Damietta, Youssef Sida was a strong, active member of the art community locally and globally. His paintings are distinguished by the use of primary colours in their purest forms. Through diverse exhibitions around the world, whether in Egypt, France, or the US, Sida gained international acclaim and recognition.

Wael Shawky (1971)

Born in Alexandria, Wael Shawky is a contemporary artist whose work boldly tackles cultural and historical identity issues. Through film and storytelling, Shawky cleverly embodies our region’s intricate historical contexts, offering a powerful medium for the world to understand us more. From Italy and Belgium to the US and China, Shawky’s work continues to impress the whole world.

 

Mohamed Abla (1953)

Known for his abstract paintings, Mohamed Abla is a contemporary artist who currently teaches in multiple places around Egypt, passing on his experience and knowledge of the craft. Abla also founded The Fayoum Art Center, a hub for all artists to connect and create art. Two of the many places he has exhibited his work are Germany and Vienna.
