Downtown Cairo has long been a meeting point for artists, ideas and different generations of the city. This summer, that creative energy has welcomed a new generation of voices as Al Ismaelia for Real Estate Investment partnered with UNESCO’s Regional Office for Egypt and Sudan and European Universities in Egypt (EUE) to bring the Youth Artists Programme to the heart of Downtown.

The five-day programme brings together 21 emerging artists aged 17 to 25 from Egypt, Sudan and Palestine, creating a space for young creatives to develop their work while exchanging ideas, experiences and perspectives across borders.

A Platform for Emerging Artists

Fully sponsored by UNESCO and hosted academically by the University of East London through European Universities in Egypt, the programme is designed to give participants more than artistic guidance. Through intensive mentorship, the young artists are developing their artistic, professional and creative skills while taking part in conversations centred around cultural exchange, dialogue and inclusion.

For artists at the beginning of their professional journeys, the programme offers an opportunity to learn from experienced mentors, connect with peers and think more deeply about where their creative practice could take them next.

Bringing Young Talent into Downtown

As part of the collaboration, Al Ismaelia opened its cultural spaces in Downtown Cairo to the programme and its participants. The Factory by Al Ismaelia hosted the programme’s jury day on 30 August, with Al Ismaelia CEO Karim Shafei joining the jury committee responsible for selecting the winning projects.

The programme will now move beyond mentorship and into the public realm, giving Downtown audiences the chance to encounter the artists’ work for themselves.

From The Factory to Art Lane

The resulting exhibition will open at The Factory by Al Ismaelia on 8 September, before moving to Art Lane, Cinema Radio, where it will remain on display until 15 September.

Bringing the work into Downtown allows the artists to reach an audience beyond the programme itself, while giving visitors an opportunity to discover new creative voices from Egypt, Sudan and Palestine.

Keeping Downtown’s Creative Spirit Alive

For Al Ismaelia, the collaboration forms part of a broader approach to the revitalisation of Downtown Cairo. Alongside restoring and adaptively reusing the area’s historic buildings, the company has sought to create spaces and programmes that allow art, culture and creative communities to remain part of Downtown’s everyday life.

Karim Shafei, CEO of Al Ismaelia for Real Estate Investment, sees this as an important part of what the company’s spaces can offer the city. Supporting the programme, he explains, gives young artists access to places where their work can be seen, discussed and taken seriously, while allowing Al Ismaelia’s buildings and cultural spaces to contribute actively to Downtown’s cultural life.

The collaboration with UNESCO and EUE also gives the participating artists greater visibility at an early stage in their professional journeys, while opening the door for more people to encounter and engage with emerging artistic voices from Egypt and the wider region.

By bringing the Youth Artists Programme into Downtown, the collaboration connects young creative talent with a part of Cairo that has long been shaped by artistic and cultural exchange.

With the jury day now complete and the public exhibition opening next week, the programme offers these emerging artists a chance not only to develop their work, but to place it within the life of the city and invite others into the conversation.
