Summer is the season of fun, but it’s a whole different story when it comes to our hair. We ladies, especially those of us with curly hair, suffer and struggle as bad hair days turn into just another day during the warmer months. Getting the perfect haircare routine takes a lot of trial and error, and all too often, our efforts end up in vain. Between the scorching heat and the humidity, especially if you’re by the beach, our hair ends up frizzy, tangled and looks and feels overall horrendous. But there definitely are ways to ensure that your hair stays healthy during this time of year, so we hope these tips prove helpful.

Wear A Hat

The sun can be extremely damaging to the hair and can dry it out really badly. So, ideally, you should stay indoors or in the shade when you can, but when that isn’t an option, go for a hat. Your hair already goes through a lot as it is, from damage from pollution to poor diet if you’re a junk food enthusiast during the summer. But there are ways to mitigate damage from the sun, and the best way to do that is to cover it. Grab your favourite baseball cap or bucket hat, or even a scarf to protect yourself from UV rays.

Moisturise!

Using a good, hydrating conditioner is a must over the summer, especially when the scorching sun is paired with humidity. And while it may be enough for some, it doesn’t always cut it for others, which is where deep conditioning comes in. These treatments restore your dry and dull summer hair and bounce it back to life. Make sure to lock in the moisture by massaging your scalp with oils like coconut and sweet almond or using serums.

Are You Drying Your Hair Right?

We never really pay much thought to the way we dry our hair, but it can actually make or break it. If you’re one to use a blowdryer, maybe ditch it during the summer as paired with the harsh sun, it can dehydrate the hair. We also have a tendency to rub our hair roughly with our towels, and that can also strip the moisture away. Instead, squeeze or blot the hair gently.

Embrace Your Natural Hair

Ditch the heat and embrace your natural hair. Of course, by heat, we don’t mean uncontrollable weather. Many of us like to style our hair, whether it be a blowout, or using straighteners, or curling irons, and the heat from these tools paired with the sun can cause serious damage to your hair. Instead, either let your hair be as God created it or try some heatless hairstyles like braids or buns. Buns are especially great in the summer, as with the ends of your hair tucked in, this particularly sensitive part of the hair is protected from UV rays and humidity.

Hydrate Yourself

This one might seem like a no-brainer, but many of us just do not drink nearly enough water, especially in the summer when we tend to sweat a lot more than usual, which can cause dehydration. We don’t tend to think of the damage done to the hair with our bodies dehydrated, but it can have a noticeable effect without us realising it. Water might not be the cure-all solution to all of your problems, but drinking a little bit more might help hydrate your hair just a tad more.
