The idea of working out might seem off-putting to some, and we get it: Getting out of bed to exercise or going to the gym after work (during the peak of your exhaustion) to wear yourself out even more sounds horrible.
Others look at it differently, though. No matter how tired they are, having a good workout recharges their energy and gives them a boost of serotonin, and they’re not wrong! We all know how working out takes a lot of commitment, so we focused on hunting down the most fun ways to work out and stumbled upon Cheerobics.
Combining the sports of cheerleading with aerobics, Cheerobics is a fusion sport that burns tons of calories in a cheerful environment. While cheerleading isn’t popular in Cairo as a proper sport, Cheerobics introduced the idea that cheerleading is, in fact, a physically demanding exercise that requires people to stay in good shape to maintain their stamina.
Samira Khalil, fitness coach and the first Egyptian certified Cheerobics trainer, launched the sport in Cairo and popularised it. By nature, Samira loves fitness and nutrition and dancing, but she was terrified of establishing an entirely new concept in Egypt. Once she did, though, she received great feedback, and the term ‘Cheerobics’ slowly became familiar among Cairenes.
The sport includes extensive arm movements since it involves pom-poms. It is also quite contagious, as the coaches smile and maintain eye contact, so one can’t help but smile back and keep up the positive vibe. Cheerobics is essentially different from other dance-based sports in that it practises cheerleading techniques and movements, incorporating workout exercises as well. Even though cheerleading is usually challenging, Cheerobics combines the best of both worlds in a simple, easy-to-follow dance routine that many can be part of. It doesn’t matter if you’re a beginner or a regular or how old you are! This sport is also the perfect release if you’re looking for a way to unwind and forget about the exhaustion of the day. It’ll make your heart pound, but you’ll also burn over 500 calories per session, usually between 45 minutes to an hour long!
If you want to learn more about Cheerobics and try a session yourself, Hers Studios and Hers Gym both have Cheerobics classes, since the founder herself is a fitness coach at Hers Studios. You can head down to these gyms and ask about the sport yourself, or check their schedules out on this Instagram page here.
