Egypt’s population has reached 100 million people, according to the population count clock in front of the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics. CNN reports that officials were unable to determine details about the new baby, or its gender, as the country welcomes a newborn every 18 seconds.
Head of population statistics at the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics, El Hameed Sharafeldin, told CNN that the digital clock announced population numbers related to those inside the country, while Egyptians abroad are the responsibility of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
A few media agencies reported that the 100 millionth newborn is a girl named Yasmine Ramadan Rabei from Samalot in Minya, yet the validity of those reports are difficult to confirm.
