The red carpet is being unrolled tonight, as the Golden Globes celebrates its 77^th edition in Beverly Hills, California. The ceremony will air live on NBC at 8:00 p.m. EST/5:00 p.m. PST.

Egyptian actor, Rami Malek is nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Drama for his performance in Mr. Robot, and this is not his first time he is up for the category. He was nominated for the same award in 2016 and 2017, and he won the Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama award in 2019 for his remarkable performance in Bohemian Rhapsody.

In Mr. Robot, Malek plays the role of Elliot Alderson, who is a senior network engineer, and also a hacker. Alderson suffers from a few mental illnesses, including social anxiety disorder, clinical depression, as well as delusions and paranoia. Malek’s extraordinary portrayal of the troubled young man is the reason for the character’s acclaimed reception.

According to BBC, the Golden Globes announced that Malek will be joining fellow nominees, Margot Robbie, Scarlett Johansson, Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio, Charlize Theron, and Daniel Craig, as an award presenter during the ceremony.

The second Egyptian nominee is actor, Ramy Youssef, who is up for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy, for his performance in Ramy. This is Youssef’s first nomination, but he had also joined the cast of Mr. Robot as the security analyst, Samar Swailem.

In Ramy, Youssef plays the title character, who is the son of Egyptian immigrants. The series, directed, written, and starring Youssef, follows Ramy on his spiritually-conflicting journey in New Jersey, where he finds himself torn between his Muslim community, his millennial friends, and God.

“I knew I wanted to make something about Arab Muslims”, said Youssef to Entertainment Weekly. “I try to be as specific as possible when saying ‘Arab Muslims’ because there are a lot of different Muslims. I’ve never really seen stories about us in America, at least where you had versions of our characters that weren’t framed by violence.”

For the fifth time, English stand-up comedian and actor, Ricky Gervais, will be hosting the ceremony. “Once again, they’ve made me an offer I can’t refuse. But this is the very last time I’m doing this, which could make for a fun evening”, Gervais told the Golden Globes. He has previously hosted the ceremony in 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2016, which brought endless rounds of laughter from viewers around the globe.

The winners will be revealed in the twenty-five categories. Also, the Cecil B. DeMille Award will be awarded to American actor, Tom Hanks, and the newly-created Carol Burnett Award will be given to talk show host, Ellen DeGeneres.
