This year’s constant wildfires in the rainforests of the Amazon have been a real wake up call for the global population. The planet’s condition is deteriorating, and we are running out of time, so the current environmental enterprises and efforts must be amplified and accelerated. One such initiative taker is the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) that has proudly shared their most recent and innovative campaign on Facebook earlier this month .
They wrote, “Glad to partner with the adventurer Ali Abdo in the longest journey on [an] electric motorcycle. Through his upcoming Guinness World Record Attempt, he will help in raising awareness and mobilizing support for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly environment and climate change.”
Let’s shed some light on the inspirational Egyptian figure, Ali Abdo. He is the founder of Around Egypt on a Motorcycle, a page dedicated to encouraging aspiring and professional motorbikers across the country. In June 2017, he was crowned a Guinness World Record holder, when he travelled the greatest distance (613.59 km) on a motocross bike in 24 hours in El Gouna. Now, he is attempting to repeat a similar feat, using the same tool, but for a different and greater purpose:the environment.
A few weeks ago, Al-Sharq Al-Awsat stated that Dr Nabila Makram, Minister of Immigration and Egyptian Expatriates Affairs, announced her consent for Ali Abdo and the UNDP’s scheduled 100-day journey to raise awareness about using vehicles run by electricity, to preserve the environment as well as reduce fuel consumption and pollution. She added that Abdo would also become an ambassador for the ministry’s “No Place Like Egypt” campaign to promote Egypt, especially abroad, to draw attention to various places in Egypt, highlighting Egyptian history and heritage and creating an Egyptian digital identity. Other collaborating parties include the Information Technology Industry Development Agency (ITIDA) and several ministries, such as Military Production, and Ministry of Youth and Sports. Moreover, according to the UNDP website, our champion’s journey will cover approximately 25,000 km, 75 cities, and undisclosed 150 locations.
Ali Abdo, we are rooting for you until the very end! Break that record!
