Watching dog videos online can get addictive if you are a diehard dog lover. A lot like the previous film in the series, A Dog’s Journey is like one long, heart-warming dog video.

The sequel to the 2017 feature A Dog’s Purpose, A Dog’s Journey follows loyal dog Bailey (Josh Gad) as he is assigned the protection of young CJ (Kathryn Prescott). Bailey will do whatever it takes to protect CJ, but will it be enough?

Yes, it’s another sweet dog story that will have you thinking that dogs are too good for us, and have you wishing you had one.

But, is it an unforgettable feature? Probably not.

Is it exceptionally novel? Not really.

A Dog’s Journey is designed to melt your heart, and if you are a dog lover, it definitely will, even through the somewhat melodramatic background around the dog-human relationship at its centre.

The feature does play on comedic aspects without pushing it to become a silly movie, which is a balance that plays in its favour, even if the comedy is more subtle than it could be in comparison with the drama.

The feature’s overall formula is not too different from that of the first film, and you don’t have to have seen the first film to fully grasp this film since it is just more of the same: adorable heartwarming dog-human relationships.

The characters are not multidimensional and mainly exist around the dog-centred cuteness to either play a shallow good role or a shallow bad role.

For the acting, Josh Gad gave a somewhat underplayed vocal performance that was heartwarming but could have been much more playful. Kathryn Prescott was able to give a strong performance and had audiences sympathising with her character very easily. Prescott was able to convey strong emotions with facial expressions, even if Baily does explain how CJ feels too often. Dennis Quaid conveys the strong bond between Ethan and Bailey, even if audiences had not seen the earlier feature, and that is where his performance truly worked. Where Quaid’s performance lacked was his character’s emotions towards his granddaughter, CJ.

If you watch dog videos nonstop, never get sick of seeing the cute fluffy canines goof around and believe that dogs and humans have a special bond, you will enjoy this movie even if you don’t remember it a couple of days later.
