Who would have guessed that paper could be made from wood, soap from oil, or clothes from cotton?  It just comes to show that there is always the possibility to make something out of nothing. Based on the announcement that was made earlier today, our government seems to firmly believe this concept.

Several online news channels revealed the Ministry of Housing’s ongoing project in 6th of October city, to convert the dull electricity switching stations (that we can all agree are a bit of an eyesore) into mesmerising works of urban art that we can all admire.

Head of the Central Administration for Beautification of Cities at the New Urban Communities Authority, Dr Bassem Fadel, stated that the initiative started in the Dahshur Axis and some parts of the Kafrawy Axis. Soon, it will expand to cover all the city’s extremities and create a unique identity for 6th of October city. For those who don’t know, the New Urban Communities Authority is an Egyptian government authority affiliated with the Ministry of Housing.

Fadel continues that the designs of the masterpieces will consist of extraordinary patterns, colours, and shapes, bearing in mind that some of the executed designs have already impacted many passersby. He stresses that the renovations are in conjunction with the country’s current major developments in various fields.

Even though the project is under the direct supervision of the government, the volunteers who are assisting Khaled Ahmed, the New Urban Communities Authority’s official artist, are students from the faculties of fine arts, law, and engineering, who all appreciate the value of art. They genuinely and unanimously believe in the cause to raise the standards of visual beauty in the city. 

Saleh Mohamed Elsinoosy, a member of staff at the faculty of fine arts in Luxor, joined the team as well. He recently stated that a recognition ceremony has been planned to award all the participants for their tremendous efforts, in the presence of Dr Waleed Abbas, an associate of the Minister of Housing, and Engineer Sherif Elsherbiny, Chairman of the Development Authority.
