In times of need, heroes are not those who fall from the sky to fight villains; they are those who are willing to make the necessary sacrifices, they are those who are willing to step up to the challenge, face the consequences, and become saviours.
The Breadwinner tells the story of a girl who is simply the embodiment of the word “hero”. After her father is wrongfully imprisoned, Parvana decides to be the provider that her family needs. Her community rejects the involvement of women in any outdoor activity, and she realizes that as a girl, she would not be able to work, and buy food for her family. A decision needs to be made, and a hero needs to step up, so she cuts off her hair, and starts dressing like a boy, to be able to provide for her family.
Directed by Nora Twomey, and coming from the creators of the Academy Award nominated films like The Secret of Kells and Song of the Sea, in collaboration with Executive Producer Angelina Jolie, it is no shock that The Breadwinner was nominated for an Oscar and a Golden Globe. It has also won a host of awards: Outstanding Voice Performance, Best Animated Female Character, and Best Animated Film.
