Egypt, Syria, Iraq, and Palestine are all countries with historical civilizations that contributed much more than just ancient historical artifacts. Indeed, the historical civilizations behind these countries have introduced the world to ideas like the importance of law and justice, and the significance of developing a cultural identity through arts and architecture. These civilizations have also given humanity the first glimpse of technology and innovation. 

It should come as no surprise, therefore, that The New York Public Library published a gallery containing approximately 9,000 illustrations and photos of the Middle Eastern region. Among this vast collection of visual materials, lies several awe-inspiring images and photographs of Egypt, taken in the early years of photography (17th – to the beginnings of the 20th century). 

This collection not only contains images captured by pioneering photographers like Du Camp, Salzmann, Robertson & Beato, and Frith; it also contains material produced for the sake of  tourists and travelers.
