Hello Cairo!

The holy month of Ramadan is in full swing now. If you’re getting tired
of all the family gatherings already and are thinking about heading out
for some quality restaurant cuisine; then check out our Cairo Guide to

After fetar, it’s so easy to lie on the couch and watch one Ramadan TV series after another, but Cairo has its share of events going on that should get you off the couch and into the festive mood.

As part of the month-long Fawanees festival sponsored by the
Egyptian Ministry of Tourism, Thursday
night will see the Tannoura Dance Group performing at El Ghouri in Islamic
Cairo.
This festival seeks to highlight Egypt’s Ramadan spirit while focusing on Cairo’s landmarks and cultural treasures. In the same spirit, but
not as part of the festival, the Abou El Gheit dervishes will perform at El
Tanboura Hall.
El Sawy Culture wheel will host its monthly puppet theatre performance of Om
Kolthoum Back on Stage as well as a talent show in their River
Hall.

El Sawy is the main host of Friday’s events and the place where you will find a traditional
mawwal performance by Mohamad Rashad, and later a performance by Nassir Shamma, the Oyoon Group
& Mai Farouq. For something a little different, you can always attend world-renowned lecturer Bassaam El
Shammaa’s talk entitled ‘The Arab Scientists’ in the Word Hall.

Saturday brings with it an exciting Ramadan edition of El Fan Midan at the Abdeen Palace Museum,
featuring Wust El Balad, vocalist Ali El Halabawy along with poet
Yasser El Leithy and Nas Makan’s ensemble, as well as some young bands,
puppet theatre, mime, art workshops and exhibitions. The event takes
place from 9PM to 2AM and is a great way to fill the gap between fetar and sohour! If
you missed El Ghouri Tannoura dance group on Thursday, you can catch them
again tonight at Wikalet El Ghouri. For something a little different, catch a
night of comedy with the Theatre of Fouad El Mohandes directed by Barakat
Zaki at El Sawy Culturewheel’s Wisdom Hall. Tickets are 10LE for members and
15LE for non-members. El Sawy will also be hosting two lectures, one on
the geography of Aruba Island in the Caribbean,
and another on ‘Fasting and the Development of the Country’ by Al Azhar scholar Dr. Atteya Fayyad.
