The food courts of Cairo’s massive Citystars Mall are always
buzzing with life and are a favourite hangout for many people. Although finding
an empty table can be a challenge on weekends, the myriad of fast food outlets always keep this reviewer coming back for more.
Located on the first floor of Phase 2,
Texas Chicken offers delicious and freshly-cooked chicken sandwiches and meals.
With only one branch in Cairo and plans to further expand into the Egyptian market, Texas
Chicken hasn’t quite developed a broad fan-base as of yet.
The joint has no paper menus; instead,
you select your order via the menu displayed on the wall behind the counter. Although
the sales assistant didn’t look a day over sixteen, he attended to us with a
professionalism and friendliness that were well beyond his years.
If you are in a large group of
friends; order one of Texas Chicken’s gigantic family meals. Eight chicken
pieces, a large packet of French fries to share and three burger buns will set you back
60LE; whereas twelve chicken pieces, two regular French fries, coleslaw salad and
five burger buns cost 75LE.
crunchy combos: three chicken pieces, coleslaw, a burger bun, fries and a soft
drink, all for 28.50LE. The deep-fried chicken was tender, juicy, well-cooked
but under-spiced. We usually prefer our fries thin
and crispy, but the crinkle-cut fries were delicious; thick and soft on the
inside.
We also sampled the Mexicana sandwich
(29LE). Served with French fries and a soft drink, the burger bun was stuffed
with a slice of deep-fried chicken breast, lettuce, cheddar cheese, nachos, mayonnaise
and onions. We couldn’t help but gape at the sandwich as it arrived. To say the
sandwich was huge is an understatement; it was a strain to make the sandwich
fit into this reviewer’s mouth. Although the onions were undercooked and left
us with terrible breath for the rest of the evening and the chicken was a bit
bland, the nachos and Mexican spices added a nice zest.
Other sandwiches options include the
barbecue chicken (19.50LE), spicy chicken (26.50LE) and the Tex wrap (16LE).
Texas Chicken offers kids’ meals as
well. For 13LE, you receive one drumstick, a chicken burger sandwich or a
tender piece of chicken, a soft drink as well as a small packet of French
fries.
Although Texas Chicken’s meals won’t necessarily blow you away, true chicken fans will not be disappointed.
